Greetings everyone,
Notice that UNM 萝莉研究所 PPD/FMD will be performing building fire drills and fire equipment tests beginning 9-4-19 at 8:30AM through 5:00PM on Thursday 9-5-19 or until all have been completed. The fire drills and testing are required to be performed annually and are to be conducted during normal operating / occupied hours. The fire alarms in each building will be activated individually, and all occupants in that building will be required to vacate, during which time our team will be documenting the Drill and testing the equipment throughout the building. Once each inspection is complete, an “ALL CLEAR” notice will be given for reentry and we will move on to the next building accordingly. Each Drill should last no more than 15 minutes.

UNM-萝莉研究所 MLT Program will be hosting two life-saving events - a Blood Drive and a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on Thursday, September 12, 2019 (9:00AM to 2:00PM) at Gurley Hall Commons Area.
BLOOD DRIVE
Please help our community by donating blood or recruiting donors. There is always a need for blood and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and every pint of blood you donate can save up to 3 lives!
Who can donate? Here are the basic requirements for blood donation:
- Must be at least 16 years old (16- and 17-year-olds must bring a signed permission form from a parent or guardian, if required by state or school). minor donor permit
- Weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Be in good general health.
- For your safety and to ensure a positive donation experience, make sure you eat within two hours ahead of your donation. Drink plenty of water that day and 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Feel free to help yourself to something to eat and drink in our refreshment area.
- Bring your ID—something with your name and one of the following: date of birth, donor ID number or your photo.
- You must wait eight weeks between whole blood donations. Learn more about specific intervals for other types of donation.
- You should not be under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs at the time of donation.

- Please bring a valid picture ID, eat a good meal and drink plenty of water.

FOR RELEASE: June 7, 2019
Ann Jarvis, faculty sponsor for the UNM-萝莉研究所 Chapter of SkillsUSA, announced that Isaiah Garcia has received the mikeroweWORKS Foundation Travel Scholarship to attend the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Isaiah, from the CCTE Fire Science Technology program of study, was recently awarded this prestigious scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to help defray travel costs to the national conference which will be held from June 24-28, 2019. As a state gold medal winner, Isaiah was eligible to apply for this scholarship which required a student-written narrative that describes financial need.
Isaiah is the only SkillsUSA member from New Mexico to be awarded this honor. He is a recent 萝莉研究所 Central High graduate and will be pursuing a career in fire and emergency services. Ann Jarvis notes, "He displays an eagerness to become involved in activities and to encourage others to participate in events. If I had to describe Isaiah in one word, I would choose 'determined' because he sees what he wants and set out a course to action to reach his intended goal."

Dr. Antoinette Abeyta has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant that will provided paid research opportunities for UNM-萝莉研究所 students. Dr. Abeyta is looking for three students to participate this summer. Please see below, and the following flyer, for details about the program and submission requirements.
Research Opportunities for Undergraduates in Earth Science and Civil Engineering -July 1 to August 16, 2019.
萝莉研究所 萝莉研究所 is offering a 8 week Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in 萝莉研究所, NM in conjunction with University of Central Florida, Montclair University, and Denison University.
Over the summer, participants will conduct cutting edge research while learning computer and statistical modeling. Participants will work with a team of researchers across the country to understand the behavior of coastal river systems.
The program is open to undergraduate students interested in civil engineering, geosciences, ecology, mathematics, or related fields. We encourage applications from students who have been historically under-represented in Science – women, Native Americans, nontraditional students, first generation college students, and veterans.
Program benefits include:

- Professional development and technical skill training

Candidate biographies:
Dr. William Brownsberger is currently the Academic Dean at Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri, a position he has held since 2012. He also holds the position of Chair of the Department of Theology at Conception Seminary College. Dr. Brownsberger earned a Doctor of Sacred Theology and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he graduated magna cum laude. He received a Master of Arts in Theology from The Catholic University of American, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Dallas. Prior to his current position, Dr. Brownsberger was the Director of Intellectural Formation at Holy Trinity Catholic Seminary in Irving, Texas and the Director of Philosophy and Letters Major and Pre-Theologian Program at the University of Texas. He has held faculty appointments since 2001 and is author of the book Jesus the Mediator as well as a number of peer-reviewed articles .
Dr. Tarlochan Singh Dhillon is currently a tenured professor of Engineering and Electronics in the Department of Engineering and Technology at New Mexico State University Dona Ana Community College in Las Cruces, New Mexico. From 2006 - 2011 he also served as the Department Chair of Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technology at the same institution. He received his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering with specialization in Solid State Electronics Devices from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Science in Engineering Physics with specialization in Electronics from Meerut University, Meerut, India, and a Bachelor of Science (triple major) in Physics with Electronics, Chemistry and Mathematics from Pan Jab University, Chandigarh, India. Dr. Dhillon has held faculty appointments since 1972 and has authored several textbooks as well as peer-reviewed journal articles.
Dr. Gouranga Banik is currently a tenured professor and prior division head in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma which is a position he has held since 2015. Prior to that he was department chair and professor for Civil and Architectural Engineering at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, as well as a tenured professor at Kennesaw State University. Dr. Banik earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a Ph.D in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Banik has authored several textbooks has an extensive list of peer reviewed articles, research publications and referred presentations.
Reminder of Two-Hour Delay Impact on Scheduling (Policy 3435 – University Administrative Policies)

Delays and Closures
For the purposes of this policy, a "delay" means that:
- employees who do not work in critical areas will not be expected to report to work until the time specified in the delay announcement;
- classes and labs normally scheduled to begin and end before the time specified in the delay announcement will not be held;
- classes and labs normally scheduled to be in progress at the time specified in the delay announcement will begin at the delayed start time and end at their normally scheduled time; and
- classes and labs normally scheduled to begin at or after the time specified in the delay announcement will meet as usual.
A closure means that the University will not be opened for the day or will be closed before the end of the regular work day. Employees will be expected to return to their normal shift or work schedule beginning at or after 6 a.m. the following day, unless otherwise specified.

Different Learning Environments – Which is Right for You?

College students have always had to navigate a myriad of choices as they decide on a school, program, career pathway and educational plan. More and more, students are also having to decide on which learning environment is best for them.
Face-to-face classes are still very popular and offer traditional coursework with students and an instructor meeting in-person on regularly scheduled dates and times, generally in a classroom setting. Online courses are offered primarily through an internet-based platform such as the UNM-utilized Blackboard learning system. Hybrid, often called blended, courses offer a combination of face-to-face and online components.
Online classes can be either synchronous or asynchronous. Synchronous classes are scheduled at regular times and students participate simultaneously through live video conferencing which allows for real-time interaction with the instructor and other students. Asynchronous classes let students log in at any time and access predesigned modules. This provides more freedom of scheduling, but students still must meet deadlines as established by the instructor.
Online learning is growing nationally as reported by U.S. News and World Reports (January 11, 2018). Of 4,700 colleges researched, more than 6.3 million students took at least one online course in the fall semester of 2016. This represents a 5.6% increase from the previous year. Public colleges and universities report the largest growth in online enrollments.
Within the University of New Mexico system, 39% of students take at least one online course each semester (http://online.unm.edu). At the UNM-萝莉研究所 branch, the spring 2019 semester will offer 73 online sections which represents 17% of total classes. 11%, or 50 sections, will be offered as either hybrid or web-enhanced (https://www.gallup.unm.edu/academics/schedule.php).
Face-to-face, online and hybrid classes all offer distinct advantages and disadvantages which students must consider when planning academic schedules. Benefits of face-to-face classes include:
- Instructors can make more immediate adjustments to content and style based on feedback, interaction and comprehension;
- Speaking and collaborative skills can often be used and developed within the more traditional classroom model;
- Some students are more motivated by the structure of face-to-face classes which are regularly scheduled, although synchronous on-line courses often follow the same structure as face-to-face;
- Certain technical, scientific and “hands-on” courses are dependent on an in-classroom or lab environment;
- Speaking skills can be more easily honed and practiced in an environment where instructors and students can have in-person engagement with immediate responses.
Face-to-face classes can have disadvantages for some students:
- There can be a lack of individualized attention and all students have to adhere to the same schedule and pace; The lecture component of face-to-face classes can sometimes discourage engagement if that is the only style used; Scheduling is rigid and can be difficult, if not impossible, for those who work full-time; Large classroom management can be challenging and distracting; Students who have a difficult time speaking in public may be intimidated by large classrooms and miss out on engagement opportunities.
In the same manner, online classes can offer benefits and drawbacks for students. Some advantages of online learning include:
- Flexibility which allows students to work on their own schedule, at their own pace and from off-campus locations. This can be beneficial for both instructors and students by enhancing work, school and life balance;
- The ability to review material is often viewed as an advantage of online classes. Students have the ability to re-watch recorded lectures and videos which can be particularly beneficial to students for whom English is a second language or for those who find a particular topic difficult and need to hear the information more than once;
- Asynchronous online classes allow students to choose when they will engage in coursework. Students can study anytime and decide when they are most intellectually alert and ready to engage with classwork;
- Facilities management is much easier for institutions if they do not have to maintain a regular classroom space;
- Access can be greatly increased by online classes. Students who do not have ready access to a local institution of higher education can be served by online courses and the availability of courses from multiple colleges offers more variety and program options.
Online learning can also have some disadvantages which means students need to consider the value of depending exclusively on this platform. When deciding on whether or not to incorporate online learning into one’s education plan some things to keep in mind are:
- Online learning may not be the best option for students who lack self-direction. Students who are not highly motivated may struggle with the responsibility of navigating online courses;
- Personal communication opportunities between students and faculty members may not be as readily available or as spontaneous as in face-to-face classroom encounters;
- Networking and collaborative opportunities may be difficult to arrange in an online class. Well-constructed online classes, however, often offer online discussion boards that can draw students into meaningful interactions;
- Training is required by students and faculty to become familiar with online platforms;
- Technology divides and malfunctions can also be problematic, especially for students who may already have limited access to internet, computers or support resources.
Hybrid classes that combine online and face-to-face coursework while offering the best of both approaches can also suffer from the disadvantages of both learning environments. All instructional platforms have clear pros and cons. The availability of multiple formats provides options that broaden access and offer choices that can enhance the ability of students to balance their roles in the classroom, the workplace and within their families and community obligations.
In order to determine the best match, students need to consider preferences in scheduling, in-person interactions, program access, and academic planning. Students should always rely on advisors and faculty mentors as valuable tools in deciding their personalized education strategies. The ability to design coursework across multiple learning platforms can help in deciding on and achieving school and life goals.

UNM-萝莉研究所 is collaborating with STC.UNM and the Innovation Academy on a spring 2019 seminar series geared towards students and community members interested in entrepreneurial training and business assistance. These seminars are free and open to the public.
The first seminar will take place Friday, January 18th, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Dean’s Conference Room, SSTC 200 (flyer below and attached). Program mentor Sandra Begay will introduce the seminar series and provide valuable information on starting and growing your own business.
